While the difference between an Estimate, Proposal, Construction-Quote, Construction/ Home Improvement Contract; may be confusing to understand, knowing the difference is crucial to the success of your projects.

Definitions (Used for Residential & Commercial Work)

Step 1. Estimate

An estimate is an APPROXIMATE educated guess about the cost and scope of a project. Estimates are NOT legally binding and can be given verbally. Prices may increase due to upgrades desired by customer and other factors. Again, an estimate is an APPROXIMATE educated guess. Estimates are used as a starting point for new projects.

Step 2. Proposal

A proposal is a more detailed document that includes information from the estimate plus other details including the type of material that will be used, such as the type of wood, paint, floors, fixtures, accessories, ETC. it will also contain the timeline for the entire project. An overall SET COST to complete the work. Proposal prices are only valid for 30 days. After the proposal is accepted then the customer will need to sign a construction contract

Step 3. Construction Contract / Home Improvement Contract

After a proposal has been approved a Construction Contract or Home Improvement Contract will be required. It is a legally binding agreement between the owner of a project and the contractor who performs the work. The contract outlines the same info as the final proposal such as the scope of work, schedule, cost estimates, and payment terms. It also defines the rights and duties of both parties and can include provisions for disputes. The construction costs are addressed simultaneously. Both Customer & Contractor will have to sign the Contract.

•Quote

There is many misinterpretations of the definition of a quote. A quote is a figure that a contractor gets from a supplier for the price of materials they need for a job. Quotes are only going to be valid for a certain period of time–generally about 30 days.***
